Theater-by-the-Grove opens a new adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic this Friday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m.
The Awakening of Spring is set in a small German town in 1922. This humorous and frank play traces the dawning sexual awareness of a group of teenagers who are simultaneously too innocent and not innocent at all. They struggle together to find truth in a world where falsehoods about adolescence prevail.
“These teenagers live in a world that’s full of rules,” says Gretta. “Their lives are completely governed by these rules that their parents, teachers, and other figures of authority have laid out for them.” He goes on to say, “By telling this story in a new way, it will expose how their world starts to break down once these teens discover who they are, question and challenge established ‘norms,’ and rebel against authority. These themes make this story more relevant today than ever for a variety of audiences.”
