Students coming back this week for classes in safety science laboratories at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be using new sampling and monitoring equipment donated by MSA Safety, Inc., based in Cranberry Township.
The equipment, valued at more than $36,500, will help support IUP’s Department of Safety Sciences’ industrial hygiene and construction labs.
The equipment is vital to providing students a hands-on learning environment that is critical to the learning process. Because the equipment and technology are utilized in real work environments, students are in a better position to effectively solve work-related problems.
“These lab courses introduce students to the chemical and physical hazards in the workplace,” said Tracey Cekada, chair of IUP’s Safety Sciences Department, “and teaches them how to utilize various sampling/monitoring equipment and technology to assess and evaluate worker exposure…skills necessary for protecting workers’ lives on the job.
“It is a goal of our department to build relationships with corporations and foundations that can help shape the educational experience for our students while placing the technology and equipment that these companies develop in the hands of the safety professionals of the future.”
Roughly 150 undergraduate and graduate students at IUP enrolled in Principles of Industrial Safety, Applied Industrial Hygiene and Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Occupational Health Hazards classes will use new hardhats and other MSA Safety-produced materials.
The gift is part of IUP’s Imagine Unlimited $75-million comprehensive campaign, which currently has gifts totaling more than $62 million. The campaign will enable IUP to reach its shared vision and step forward as a national leader, distinguished by new thinking that has no limits and that cuts across traditional academic boundaries.
