Over the spring 2019 semester, students enrolled in the HOSP 310 Professional Development in the Hospitality Industry course developed a new mentor program for provide freshman, sophomore, and transfer students who are fairly new to the department with a friend and a mentor to help their transition to IUP. The students developed program objectives and mentor and mentee applications, planned program events, and are developing a template for implementation in the fall 2019 semester.

Student Team Members: Jennifer Seefeld, Deanna Bibbus, Carly Huff, Alec Covelli, and Kady Hodge.

Mentors will consist of junior and senior Hospitality Management student volunteers with at least a 3.0 GPA. These credentials ensure mentees have experienced and school-focused students help them in their transition into the Hospitality Management Department.

We would like each mentor/mentee pairing to meet at least once a week, and we want to hold events at least twice a month to get all mentors and mentees talking to each other. These events will provide great networking opportunities for all students, and will provide an opportunity for students to make new friends who share the same major as them.

Eta Sigma Delta is the Hospitality Management Honor Fraternity on IUP’s campus. To be inducted into Eta Sigma Delta you must be a Hospitality Management student, hold a 3.0 GPA, have completed at least 50 percent of the degree requirements for graduation, and meet at least 20 service hours a semester. As for the future of the mentor program, Eta Sigma Delta plans on making this their project and will ensure it is a success starting next semester.
