twitterliederUnder the baton of Professor Ryan Beeken, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Department of Music will close its Sound Choices series this year with the performance of “#twitterlieder & Alzheimer’s Stories” on Sunday, May 5, at 3:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium in the Performing Arts Center on the IUP campus.

Forty alumni and numerous members of the music department faculty will be joining over 100 students from the IUP Choral Department, as they present the powerful modern oratorio “Alzheimer’s Stories” by Robert S. Cohen and Herschel Garfein. The concert also will feature a light-hearted work by Charles Anthony Silvestri and James Eaken called “#twitterlieder,” which chronicles the cycle of a person’s life from youth to old age through 15 “tweets” limited to only 140 characters each.  The visiting alumni will be serving as soloists, guest conductors, and choristers.

In summing up the upcoming performance featuring these numerous performers, Beeken shared that the IUP Choral Department is “celebrating our, past, present, and future by partnering with alumni, faculty and current students to produce a concert that explores our shared humanity from the perspective of our shared experiences growing from youth to old age.”

Both pieces have three acts or movements.  Alzheimer’s Stories is in three movements: “The Numbers” (how many people are affected by Alzheimer’s), “The Stories” (a compilation of anecdotes about the disease), and “For the Caregivers” (advice for those who care for Alzheimer’s patients). Meanwhile, #twitterlieder is in three acts: Youth, Middle Age, and Old Age. At the end of each act, an unaccompanied “Greek Chorus” comments on the previous life events.
