The Planning Student Organization of the Department of
Geography & Regional Planning in cooperation with the Indiana County Office
of Planning & Development hosted “A Day in the Life of a Planner” professional
development seminar for students on Tuesday April 16th, 2019 in the
Humanities & Social Sciences Building on the IUP campus.
Three professionals shared their perspectives on being
professional planners: Ms. Katie Kinka, Senior Planner, Cambria County Planning
Commission; Mr. Andrew Schwartz, Managing Principal, Environmental Planning
& Design LLC (Pittsburgh, PA); and Josh Spano, Transportation Planner,
Southwestern Pennsylvania Regional Planning Commission
As part of the seminar, Kinka, Schwartz and Spano presented narratives
describing: 1) how they became a professional in the planning field; 2) their
job description and responsibilities; 3) things they like
best about their jobs as planners; 4) things they like least about their jobs as
planners; and 5) their perspectives on the future of planning.
Students had the opportunity to ask questions about planning
profession, what to expect in their daily professional lives, and how to deal
with the challenges of working as planners. The two-hour session wrapped up
with an interactive question and answer segment where IUP students and the
visiting professionals discussed the future of the profession.
