Robert Stewart '81 Distinguished Alumni April 2019 1Robert Stewart ’81 was selected as a 2019 Distinguished Alumni at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to attending many campus events over the April 5–7 weekend, Stewart spent time with students in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology.

Stewart spoke in Ibahim Affaneh’s Financial Institutions class in the morning; toured the Eberly facility, including the Financial Trading Room and Bloomberg Lab; and met with students over lunch.

Stewart received his BS in business/finance and economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1981 and went on to receive his MBA from Drexel in 1987. He is a member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Society of Pittsburgh and is a chartered financial analyst and a certified management accountant.

Stewart served as the managing director of Investment Technology at PNC Management from 1981 to 2000. He worked in several departments at PNC Bank before joining their investment management division, eventually assuming responsibility for all investment-related systems. Along with “RC” Collins, Stewart built a team that created a browser-based portfolio management system in 1996 that was used at PNC for the next 20 years.

Robert Stewart '81 Distinguished Alumni April 2019 2Using the knowledge gained from working in the PNC Asset Management Group, Stewart created InvestEdge and hired another former PNC employee, Roland “RC” Collins, to launch InvestEdge in June 2000. InvestEdge provides software to firms to manage high net worth customer portfolios with analytics, trade calculation, risk management, performance calculation, and reporting tools. Stewart, who is founder and CEO of the company, funded the launch, using no outside funding—today, the founders and employees own 99 percent of the shares.

Today, InvestEdge is used by 115 banks, brokerage, and advisory firms that collectively manage over one trillion in assets. The firm has grown from two employees at the launch to 75 today and has won several Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania awards.

Colton Kensinger, finance student and chief economist for the Student Managed Investment Portfolio team, appreciated Stewart’s presentation. “I enjoyed learning about the role of artificial intelligence and how the investment landscape is shifting towards humans handling the person to person contact, while the actual investment decisions are handled by algorithms. Robert provided me with insight into opportunities that are available postgraduation. He also showed a broad knowledge of current finance topics that are applicable in our current market.”

Destiny Julio, Communications Services Sector leader for SMIP also had the opportunity to sit in one of Stewart’s discussions. “Mr. Stewart stressed the importance of getting the challenging parts of life and your career done early. He told us to go get the CFA or CPA as soon as we can. Not only will it be easier when having a fresh college brain, but it will only help you excel more in your career early on. It struck me that he said most of what current students will be doing in 20 years isn’t even a job at this moment. Your future job may have not even been discovered yet. This only makes me think more about the growing change in the financial fields and the impact of technology.”

The Eberly College of Business and Information Technology congratulates Robert Stewart on his award as a Distinguished Alumni and appreciates the time that he spent with our students, faculty, and staff during his visit to IUP.
