Mackenzie Barr has been awarded the 2019 IUP Punxsutawney Essay Scholarship for her essay, “Words Matter.”
This scholarship opportunity is offered each spring and is open to any full-time student enrolled at IUP Punxsutawney and who demonstrates a minimum 2.0 CPGA.
This year, after watching IUP’s Free Speech on the University Campus video and reviewing the website, students
were asked to write an essay regarding how the video impacted their thoughts and why words matter, as well as propose a balance between freedom of speech with freedom from threatening or traumatizing environments.
Mackenzie was awarded $750. Honorable mentions were awarded to Amanda Rake and Amber Huffman, who each received $125.
