Spring 2019 Hospitality Management Industry Advisory Board Meeting

The Department of Hospitality Management’s Industry Advisory Board met on Friday, March 22, 2019, in Ackerman Hall. 

Members were greeted in the Allenwood with a breakfast buffet designed by students in Chef Jeff Santicola’s HOSP 330 Applications of Food Production and Service course. The morning session provided an update and review of the department, college, and university operations. Lunch was then provided in the Allenwood by Chef Santicola’s students. 

The afternoon brainstorming session provided IAB  input on topics such as enrollment and retention, resource acquisition, alumni mentoring and networking opportunities, job placement and internships, curriculum, and marketing and public relations with the industry. An afternoon “snack” of fresh, homemade soft pretzels and an ice cream bar highlighted the meeting.

Attendees at this year’s meeting included Bill Jardine, retired corporate chef, food broker, and former owner of Jardine’s Restaurant and Catering; Randy Gray, talent acquisition manager, Special Restaurant Group, Bahama Breeze and Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Darden Restaurants; Glenn Buse, vice president, Human Resources, PCS Mobile Solutions; Katie Bricker, foodservice and general marketing manager, Homer Laughlin China Company; Brianna Tomack, president, Greater Latrobe Laurel Valley Chamber of Commerce; Tim Sweitzer, director of Food and Nutrition, UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside; Paul Mesenburg, general manager, Hotel Breakers, Cedar Point, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company; and Chef David Whetsel, CRC, FMP Aramark, district executive chef, Mid-Atlantic Region, Higher Education.

Representing the College of Health and Human Services were Mary Williams, PhD, Dean; Amy Cook, assistant dean; and Josh Castle, PhD, dean’s associate for Administration. 

Attending from the Department of Hospitality Management were Stephen Shiring, EdD, MBA, chairperson; Yasong (Alex) Wang, PhD; Nicole Buse, MA; Chef Jeffrey Santicola, FMP, CCC, MSEd; and Sherry DiPaolo.
