Todd Nathan Thompson, professor of English and assistant chair of the English Department, delivered a paper for the American Humor Studies Association’s panel “Pushing Boundaries: American Humor in the Nineteenth, Twentieth, and Twenty-First Centuries.”
Thompson’s paper, titled “Viral Jokes and Fugitive Humor in the Nineteenth-Century Culture of Reprinting,” traced a single joke from the 1850s that was reprinted over 100 times in newspapers and magazines. In doing so he offered a new methodology for
studying and analyzing periodical humor.
