Scene from "World Builders"The Department of Theater and Dance at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present World Builders, a new play written by Johnna Adams. This production is directed by IUP faculty member Rob Gretta. The performances run for a limited engagement from November 13 to 17, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. on the Waller Hall Mainstage on the IUP campus.

World Builders is a 90-minute dark romantic comedy focusing on Whitney and Max, two patients in a clinical drug trial for schizoid personality disorder. During this drug trial, the two patients meet, fall in love, and must decide whether to build a world together or continue to live in the worlds the drugs seek to destroy.

Gretta shared, “After reading several plays during the selection process, I knew World Builders was the one I wanted to direct. It has an engaging topical story, characters with depth and richness, and moments of humor as well as pathos.” He went on to say that he agrees with playwright Johnna Adams, “This will always be a very precious play to me because it has made people who feel very alone feel less alone in the theater.”

“We are fortunate to be one of the first productions of World Builders beyond the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere process” said dramaturg Carrie Cole. “I had the opportunity to see the premier at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival and was immediately struck by the quality of Johnna Adams writing. When Rob [Gretta] told me what kind of play he was looking for, I was eager to share the manuscript. Through his passion and advocacy for the play, we’ve been able to bring it to Theater-By-The-Grove before the play is published as part of our celebration of 40 years of theater at IUP.”
