On Monday, October 15, Rick Ubinger, a 1981 IUP graduate, came in to speak to Daniel Lawson’s Finance Seminar class (FIN422). Out of college, Ubinger worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers—one of the “Big Four” accounting firms. Ubinger was at PwC for 15 years before joining Universal Stainless and Alloy Products out of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. He joined as the company’s founding chief financial officer and now works for himself at Ubinger CFO Services and as the co-owner and CFO of Acuity Finishing.

Ubinger took Universal Stainless public through an initial public offering. It now trades at 22.41 per share on the NASDAQ exchange. Through this process of aiding Universal in their IPO and the ups and downs of its share price, he discovered his passion for aiding small businesses. Ubinger CFO Services was started out of this passion. Through his company, he helps businesses by focusing on sales, pass-through costs, total employment costs, and fixed costs. He only uses word-of-mouth to market his business—which has worked very well for him as he is currently at full capacity. In addition to this, in 2012 he purchased Plastikoil, a Pittsburgh-based binding service, and rebranded it to “Acuity Finishing.”

Ubinger emphasized the importance of networking and building connections with professionals. You never know who is watching/listening—professional and respectful conduct doesn’t go unnoticed and can be the metaphorical foot-in-the-door for jobs.

Student Miranda Hershey summarized, “Today's speaker, Rick Ubinger, shared valuable stories with the class about how he got to where he is now in his professional career and explained his willingness to take risks that amounted to some of his greatest successes. He left me with the advice to always question things whether or not ‘that is always the way it has been done,’ and to focus on building relationships with individuals because you never know who could be an asset to a future project of yours.”

Dan Lawson, instructor for the Finance Seminar class, appreciated Ubinger’s presentation. “Rick is an exceptional IUP alumnus who serves on the Dean’s Business Advisory Council and on the Foundation for IUP Board of Directors. We are fortunate to have someone that is dedicated to helping students gain real world experience and to preparing them for their futures in the workplace.”
