Scene from "Sweeney Todd "Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Music Theater will present the musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. This semi-staged version of the musical will take place on October 26–27 at 7:30 p.m. on the Fisher Auditorium stage of the IUP Performing Arts Center and will feature the IUP Symphony Orchestra.

This musical thriller is based on the 1973 play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Christopher Bond. The story tells a tale of revenge with the return of barber Sweeney Todd after many years in exile, seeking to take vengeance on the corrupt judge who banished him. Todd conspires with Mrs. Lovett, the pie maker, who is in desperate need of fresh meat for her pies.

IUP faculty member and director of Opera and Music Theater Oliver Lo served as the producer and director for this production of Sweeney Todd. Colleen Ferguson served as the conductor for the IUP Symphony Orchestra. For this semi-staged production, the IUP Symphony Orchestra will be on the stage with the singers, and the focus will be more on the music and the lyrics of the production than set pieces and props.

In describing his thoughts on the upcoming production, Lo remarked, “Sweeney Todd is one of the greatest dramma giocoso (drama with comedy) in the history of the musical.” Lo continued, asking, “Should we laugh, or should we cry? Should we find it funny, or should we be scared?”
