In his presentation at the English Association of Pennsylvania State Universities (EAPSU) 2018 Fall Conference held at Shippensburg University, Tim Hibsman (English Department) delivered a presentation titled "Implementing Creativity and Reverse Engineering in Professional and Technical Writing."

Abstract

Practicality and real-life applications come to mind when thinking of professional and technical writing. However, course projects can often incorporate creative practices to teach the core concepts of the class. Cartoons, blogs, product labels, floor plans are some examples. Also, the writing process is turned upside down as creativity comes to the fore—instead of teaching beginning, middle and end, some assignments start at the end and work backwards. Students look at examples of finished products and reverse engineer the models to see what makes them tick. This creative approach to the writing process provides students with more insight into professional and technical writing strategies.
