As part of its Sound Choices series, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Department of Music will open the 2018–19 Sound Choices season with the concert “Myths, a Faculty Voice Recital” on Friday, October 12, 2018. The program will start at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall.

Myths Faculty Voice RecitalThis concert will feature the work of the Pittsburgh-based music ensemble Musica Mundana. This ensemble is composed of Raquel Winnica Young, mezzo-soprano, and Justin Wallace on harpsichord. The ensemble explores repertoire for alto and continuo from different countries and eras, beginning with the Baroque period and moving forward into today’s classical cantata by Haydn. For each performance they invite different musicians for collaboration, and for this concert they will be working with Baroque violinist Paul Miller, gamba player Patricia Halverson, and Joseph Baunoch, bass-baritone from IUP’s Department of Music. Winnica Young also instructs voice for IUP’s Department of Music.

Historical and mythological figures were an important inspiration for composers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Musica Mundana explores two of those for the upcoming performance: Ariadne, the abandoned lover of Theseus, and Dido, queen of Carthage, who threw herself into flames after Aeneus’ unfaithful departure. Both women experience a huge range of emotions, and both Michel Montéclair and Joseph Haydn took full advantage of this volatility in their settings of the text. In the case of the Sonata by Tartini, the violin itself takes on the musical role of the spurned queen.
