Lively Arts Opens Season with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Helwig Distinguished Artist

The Lively Arts at IUP opens its 2018–19 Ovations season with a performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The concert will feature this year’s Helwig Distinguished Artist, violinist Pinchas Zukerman, and will be presented Saturday, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

Pinchas ZukermanThe orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Manfred Honeck, will open the concert with Beethoven’s only opera, Overture to Fidelio, Opus 72. Zukerman will join the orchestra for Max Bruch’s masterful Concerto No. 1 in G Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 26. In the second half, the orchestra will close the concert with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 73.

The audience is then invited to a free post-show reception in the Crimson Café, sponsored by IUP Dining.

Zukerman began his musical career at age four, and he adopted the violin only four years later. He was born in Tel Aviv, but moved to the United States as he expanded his career. While studying at the Juilliard School, he released a recording of his music, which was excellently received and continues to be a source of great pride. From there, he began his conducting career and directed a variety of national orchestras. He continues to receive a wide variety of honors, including the National Medal of Arts, and is continually invited to perform with a host of prestigious musicians and orchestras across the globe.

Tickets for this event are available for purchase online through the Lively Arts website or by calling the ticket hotline at 724-357-1313. They can also be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office in Fisher Auditorium. Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $40 for regular admission, $36 for ages 60 and over, $23 for military and I-Card, and $20 for IUP students and 18 and under. Online tickets are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ticket hotline and ticket office in Fisher Auditorium are open from noon to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. The ticket office is closed for university holidays. Tickets are longer be available at the Hadley Union Building. Manfred Honeck The appearance of Pinchas Zukerman with the Pittsburgh Symphony is funded, in part, by the Helwig Distinguished Artist Endowment, established in 1988 by the late Florence L. Helwig in memory of her husband, Wilfred E. Helwig. The endowment and the Helwig family have supported the appearance of 18 different performing artists since that time.

The Ovations Series is funded, in part, by donations through the Premiere Club, business sponsorships, grants, and the IUP Student Cooperative Association. The Lively Arts, a program of the College of Fine Arts, presents nearly 200 performances, programs, and exhibits annually.
