English Professor Daniel J. Weinstein, in collaboration with Theater Professor Carrie J. Cole presented at the Annual Conference of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning, (an official assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English) on June 22, 2018.
Their presentation was titled Teaching Mindful Artistry Through Radical Presence.
In her book, Radical Presence: Teaching as Contemplative Practice, Mary Rose O’Reilley writes of teaching from “radical presence,” from a contemplative commitment to “consider the singularity of each [student, as well as] the diversity of [student]
needs.” In this presentation, two faculty members from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dan Weinstein and, by proxy, Carrie Cole (Integrative Theater Studies and Dramaturgy) shared tales from their teaching that reflect how they, through
their own implementations of radical presence, set the stage for teachable moments to arise organically from hospitable silence. This silence is not to be feared but embraced as an essential enabling condition for differentiated, self-motivated, mindful learning
