Steele showed pictures that won her and her colleagues at the Dallas Morning News the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for breaking-news photography.

The Pulitzer jury said the paper won the award for its vivid photographs depicting the chaos and pain after Hurricane Katrina engulfed New Orleans. Steele elaborated and responded to animated student questions.

The Journalism and Public Relations Department and the Elizabeth Sweeney Foundation hosted Steele, who also signed copies of her 2015 book, Delta Jewels: In Search of my Grandmother’s Wisdom. Proceeds from sales go to Steele’s nonprofit, Delta Jewels Support Foundation.
