The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the American debut of the highly popular Chinese music group HAYA in their Migration Concert as part of the Ovations! series on Thursday, April 5, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium.

Haya; Migration Concert PhotoFounded in 2006, HAYA is a group of musicians who represent a new era in folk music. These artists have won many accolades, including from the China Music Awards (Best World Music Performance) and the Chinese Media Awards. They have also received the Taiwan Golden Melody Award for Best Crossover Music on two occasions, and their album Silent Skies is the best-selling soul/world music album of all time in Taiwan.

Composer Tan Dun, a fan of HAYA, says, “Listening to their music, your body feels like the Earth, your blood like the rivers, your eyes like the sky. They search constantly among traditional and contemporary music for the sound of the human soul. What HAYA expresses is not only their understanding of modern Mongolian music, but also their passion for nature, and the voice of their hearts.”

What might American audiences expect from the debut of this very popular Chinese group’s performance? HAYA’s Migration Concert employs innovative musical language alongside classic traditional songs, fusing a variety of musical elements such as chants, the Mongolian horsehead fiddle, plucked string instruments, throat singing, and shaman drums. Their shows have a distinct “ceremonious” feel. Their concerts aim to provide the audience with a path for escape from a fast-paced modern world through a contemporary migration to another world, one celebrating the wonders of nature and life.

Tickets for the performance are available for purchase online through the Lively Arts website or by calling the ticket hotline at 724-357-1313.
