As teachers, we are used to hearing the term “teaching persona.” But what kind of teaching persona exists online? A talk at the recent Rutgers Online Learning Conference took up that question as Peter Sorrel (English Department) discussed his use of unedited YouTube videos as a means of developing a unique persona in a visibly human and charismatic way so as to better engage students as he teaches online Business and Technical Writing courses at Rutgers University.

Sorrell teaches full-time in the IUP English Department and online at Rutgers University, where he was a director in the Writing Program for many years. He specializes in basic writing and business and technical writing.

Sorrell has published on the novels of Raymond Queneau and the role of social media for both undergraduate and graduate students, and has recently presented on the use of the movie The Shining in the first-year composition classroom.
