Leonard Hall demolition is underwayFor the next several weeks, construction vehicles will be traveling around Leonard Hall to complete demolition of the building by taking materials from the building away from campus.

Razing of Leonard Hall is part of the university’s long-range campus plan; this work makes way for IUP’s new building for the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Construction for this new science facility is set to begin in spring 2020.

“We understand that pedestrians are not anticipating large vehicles in this area, so we are asking for the patience, understanding, and extra caution from students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and we will be working to keep the area safe,” Mike Brown, associate vice president for Facilities Management, said.

Construction workers will be acting as “truck spotters,” walking in front and behind trucks, to help keep persons walking in the area aware of these vehicles and watching for pedestrians. Trucks will also be traveling at very slow speeds when on campus.

The demolition project is expected to take the next six weeks and include six trips a day back and forth from the demolition site. Some sidewalks will be shut down for safety, but signage will give pedestrians directions on which sidewalks are safe to use.

After all the building materials are removed, the site will be cleaned, graded, and seeded in preparation for the next phase of the project, which is the demolition of Walsh Hall.
