Partnering with the Historical and Genealogical Society of
Indiana County, the University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
will present “Memory and Magic: Folk Artists in Western Pennsylvania” from February 3 through March 10, 2018. An opening reception will be held at
the University Museum from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 3.
Admission is free.

Donna Cashdollar and Rhonda Yeager will serve as curators
for the exhibit which has a special emphasis on the folk artists and artisans
of Indiana County. The exhibit will include works from Richard Cooper, Earl
Deemer, B.A. Harrington, and Marion Center native Linton Park, whose primitive
masterpiece “Flax Scutching Bee” is in the collection of the National Gallery
of Art in Washington, D.C. Park’s painting “Deer Hunter’s Return: Near
Patchinville” is a featured work in this exhibit. Beyond Indiana County, the
exhibition also features Pennsylvania artists Mary Hamilton, Eunice McCloskey,
and Mary Clark George, among others.
Art and objects in the exhibition are drawn from the
collections of the University Museum and the Historical and Genealogical
Society of Indiana County as well as from private collections in the region. In
addition to several historical self-taught artists, the exhibition will feature
present-day artists who continue in the folk spirit. Whether self-taught or
formally trained, their work is inspired by traditions and memories,
spirituality, folklore, or simply the impulse to create with whatever is at
hand.
The University Museum is located on the first floor of
Sutton Hall, located at 1011 South Drive, Indiana. The museum hours are from 2:00
to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; noon to 7:30 p.m. Thursday; and
