Billed as “The World’s Foremost All-Male Ballet Company,” Les Ballets
Trockadero de Monte Carlo dances onto stage for the next performance in the 2017–18 Ovations!
lineup presented by the Lively Arts of IUP. This comedic and entertaining
performance will be presented Monday, February 5, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher
Auditorium, located in IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Internationally known as Les Ballets Trockadero, this all-male group of
professional dancers is making it their mission to bring the pleasure of dance
to the widest audience they possibly can. Touring internationally, the group
has performed in over 33 countries and 500 cities, including Paris, New York
City, Vienne, Rome, and Madrid.
perform the full range of ballet and modern dance repertoire, including both
classical and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits
of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating
the quirks, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts–heavy
bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic
princesses, angst-ridden Victorian ladies–enhances rather than mocks the spirit
of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well
as novices, in the audiences.
Establishing themselves around the world, the group has performed in
dance festivals in many countries, including Turkey, Finland, France, Spain,
Bolivia, Italy, and Austria. Founded in 1974 by ballet enthusiasts, they wanted
to present traditional, classic ballet in a more playful and entertaining way,
and they continue to strive for that in their performances today. Beginning
their performance careers in late-late shows in Off-Off Broadway lofts, they
quickly earned positive critical essays and reviews in the New Yorker, the New
York Times, the Village, and more. Affectionately known as “The Trocks,” they
have proved that man can, in fact, dance en pointe and have achieved the
popularity and success they have today.
