That's the kind of question students will attempt to answer in the COMM 480 course Fake News, Photoshop and Media Manipulation, offered by the Department of Communications Media.
Professor Mary Beth Leidman will challenge students to investigate the veracity of media claims, compare news reports from various media, and determine where truth is blended with fiction.
According to Leidman, fake news is nothing new. “We can look back at historical events such as Orson Welles’ 1938 radio broadcast of ‘War of the Worlds’ to see how media stories, true or not, have affected audiences.”
This is the first time the course has been offered and is open to all students.
