Giving Tuesday at IUP Presents Opportunities to Share and Give

#GivingTuesdayIUP is jumping into #GivingTuesday, an international day of giving, and the university needs your help to spread the word and inspire philanthropic gifts in support of IUP students and promote good works in the greater community.

“Throughout the day, you’ll see e-mail and messages in IUP’s social media venues that encourage supporting IUP,” said Emily Smeltz, director of Annual Giving. “I hope you’ll share those messages with your friends, family, and colleagues, and I encourage everyone to respond by giving, too. After all, our students are the future. But I also want to stress that Giving Tuesday isn’t only about dollars. It’s about people giving their time and talent, too, particularly our students.”

Smeltz pointed out that philanthropic support of scholarships gives students the time and flexibility to access an array of opportunities that prepare them to be well-rounded leaders of the future. In turn, she said, students have a proven track record giving back to the IUP and greater communities through their time, their talent, and their own treasure.

How You Can Help

  • Share! When you see posts about Giving Tuesday on IUP's Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram accounts, share them.
  • Give! You can make your own investment in IUP students during Giving Tuesday. Make an immediate gift right now.  When you do, take a moment to tell people you helped an IUP student today. Use the #Unselfie template to let your friends know that you believe in the power of the IUP experience. Use #IUPGivingTues when you share.
  • Talk to your students! Tell them how important volunteering in the community can be not just for the community but also for their own growth. You also can let them know about the Grant Street Park Project, a new student giving project for all IUP students, kicks off today. Terry Serafini ’61 will give $10,000 toward the project if 100 students from each of the four class standings join him in making an investment. Students are well on their way to meeting this challenge. You can learn more at Give to Grant St. Park. If you want to know more, stop by the Philanthropy Tree in Stapleton Library between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Members of the Student Philanthropy Council will be there to talk about the Grant Street Park Project.

“We all know about Black Friday and its newer counterpart, Cyber Monday. Today is your chance to learn about the newest, and arguably the best day, IUP Giving Tuesday,” Smeltz said. “Let’s put IUP in the forefront of this international effort.”
