Did you know that 68 percent of America’s fourth graders do not read at a proficient level? Are you also aware that one out of six children who do not read at age level by the end of third grade will not graduate from high school? These are alarming statistics! Would you like to help?

The first step to literacy is getting books in the hands of children. The Angels’ Wings Program, sponsored by the Indiana Gazette, aims to make the holidays a little more special for families in need throughout Indiana County. Each year, IUP Libraries supports this program by collecting new children’s and young adult books in order to promote literacy and a love of reading in homes where parents find it difficult to put food on the table, let alone provide quality reading material for their children.

There are 150 local, disadvantaged youth who would love to receive a new book of their very own for Christmas! If you’d like to participate and donate a book to Angels’ Wings, please contact Kelly Heider, IUP education librarian, at
