On September 20, 2017, the IUP Eberly College of Business and Information Technology’s Student Accounting Association, in collaboration with the IUP Career and Professional Development Center, held their annual Accounting Career Day at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic
Complex. Accounting Career Day is a career fair for accounting majors.
This year’s event attracted 76 accounting professionals (most of whom were IUP accounting alumni) from 34 organizations who were interested in talking to accounting majors about
summer leadership programs, summer internships, permanent positions, graduate school, CPA exam review courses, and membership in professional accounting associations. Just over 100 IUP accounting majors took advantage of this opportunity to network
with employers and to learn more about the accounting profession. In addition, 70 accounting students from 11 surrounding universities participated.
Companies represented included 17 public accounting firms, three banks, four government agencies, three MBA programs, four accounting professional associations, an executive search firm, a CPA review company, and a large health care company.
The Accounting Career Day is organized into three segments: a two-hour morning session open only to IUP students, a 90-minute buffet-style lunch, and a two-hour afternoon session open to both IUP students and accounting students from surrounding universities.
The SAA prepared a resume book for the recruiters which included over 80 IUP accounting majors’ resumes. Accounting and safety science are the only majors on campus that host their own career fair every year.
In addition to the 76 professionals, 79 accounting majors and 13 IUP faculty and administrators attended the lunch held in the KCAC’s PNC room. Each accounting major was seated at a table with three to five accounting professionals. Following the buffet
lunch, the SAA Institute of Internal Auditors chair, Kylie Hissem, spoke about the SAA’s mission and the importance of accounting majors being involved in the SAA.
Hissem also recognized the efforts of Jan Shellenbarger of IUP’s Career and Professional Development Center, and Kim Anderson, the SAA faculty advisor, for their help in organizing
the event. Shellenbarger and Anderson worked closely with the SAA vice president, Clayton Treible, and the SAA Career Day co-chairs, Katelyn Cramer and Quinn Cunningham, to make this year’s Accounting Career Day one of the best ever.
According to Shellenbarger, “The Accounting Career Day is one of the most impressive career fairs on campus, since we can always count on enthusiastic employers who know a good product when they see one, and students who show up clearly prepared for the
The lunch program continued with SAA Mentoring Chair Anthony Maticic, who thanked the IUP Accounting Department faculty members and administrators in attendance for their support. Maticic introduced Robert Camp, dean of the Eberly College of Business.
Camp thanked the group for their attendance and indicated how proud he was of this event, the accounting majors, and our alumni.
Next, SAA Vice President of Finance Justin Palaschak introduced the keynote speaker, Nicole Miller, a 2014 IUP accounting alumna. Miller is currently a senior associate with EY, one of the Big 4 international public accounting firms, in their Pittsburgh
office, where she has worked for three years. Miller spoke about the importance of her involvement in student organizations while at IUP, particularly her leadership roles in the SAA and participation in the IUP women’s soccer team. Her involvement
in the SAA eventually lead her to her current position with EY. In fact, she was introduced to the key campus recruiter at EY at the Accounting Career Day lunch when she was a student! SAA President Katie Swauger concluded the lunch by thanking everyone
for participating in this important event for IUP accounting majors.
