Lively Arts will present the New York
Gilbert and Sullivan Players in HMS
Pinafore as the grand finale of its 2016–17 Ovations! season. This
light-hearted musical comedy will be performed on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in
Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center. A special early curtain time
of 7:00 p.m. is set.
Pinafore sails onto the Fisher stage
with the cast and crew of the highly regarded New York Gilbert and Sullivan
Players. This international touring ensemble of professional singers, actors,
dancers, and musicians is firmly dedicated to bringing quality performances of
the Gilbert and Sullivan masterpieces to as wide an audience as possible.
HMS Pinafore, subtitled The Lass That Loved a Sailor, was first
performed at London’s Opera Comique in 1878 and has remained popular on both
sides of the Atlantic ever since. With its plot imbued with mirth and silliness
and as sailors, sisters, cousins, and aunts sing and dance their way across the
deck of the fanciful British naval vessel, the show flows through a wave of
music and laughter.
production of HMS Pinafore features
an elaborate setting of a ship’s deck based on drawings by Gilbert himself,
allowing us to be taken into the mind of the creator. Coupled with its
satirical wit meant solely to amuse audiences of every age, the universal
nature of human foibles shines through.
