An Evening with Piper KermanThe Student Activity Committee (STATIC) and Six O’clock Series are proud to present An Evening with Piper Kerman: Author of Orange is the New Black. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Fisher Auditorium. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and the event will begin at 6:00 p.m.. This is a free event, and is open to the entire IUP campus community.

According to her official biography, “Piper Kerman is the author of the memoir Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison from Spiegel & Grau. The book has been adapted by Jenji Kohan into an Emmy Award-winning original series for Netflix.

Piper is a frequent invited speaker to students of law, criminology, gender and women’s studies, sociology, communications, and creative writing, and also to groups that include the International Association of Women Judges, the American Correctional Association’s Disproportionate Minority Confinement Task Force, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the National Criminal Justice Association, federal probation officers, public defenders, justice reform advocates and volunteers, and formerly and currently incarcerated people.

In 2014 she was awarded the Justice Trailblazer Award from John Jay College’s Center on Media, Crime & Justice and the Constitutional Commentary Award from The Constitution Project; the Equal Justice Initiative recognized Piper as a Champion of Justice in 2015.”

Kerman will present a keynote address and will facilitate a question-and-answer session. Afterwards, guests are invited to stay for a meet-and-greet and book signing with the author. The Co-op Store is selling copies of Piper’s book both in the store and at the event for a special price of $11. The Six O’clock Series will provide attendance vouchers to all individuals at the event.
