Bryna Siegel Finer, assistant professor of English, will serve on a Q&A panel after a screening of the documentary Pink and Blue: Colors of Hereditary Cancer at the Manor Theater in Pittsburgh on Sunday, April 23.
Siegel Finer's research looks at how women with genetic predispositions to breast and ovarian cancer use writing, particularly online, to create discursive identities separate from those of breast cancer survivors, and how their writing calls for an explicitly feminist activist healthcare agenda. She is also a peer support group co-leader for Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, or
FORCE, the only national organization that supports families living with genetic markers for breast and ovarian cancer.
The panel will also include the film's director, Alan Blassberg, and UPMC physician and specialist in women's healthcare, Jamie Stern.
Pink and Blue was the winner for best documentary at the women's independent film festival. The screening and panel are open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the
film festival website.
