On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, Cory Shay, director of IUP’s Military and Veterans Resource Center, met informally with a dozen Pennsylvania legislators at the State Capital in Harrisburg and discussed how the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education supports veterans and military-affiliated students.
Shay spoke about the academic, financial, community partnerships, and student and university engagement supports for the 2,200 veterans who are currently enrolled in the State System.
Following his presentation, Shay engaged in a question-and-answer session with the legislators. Their questions centered around specific programs, the campus climate towards veterans and military-affiliated students, and how the State System currently supports students who are serving in the reserves and National Guard.
Shay was chosen by the Pennsylvania State System’s assistant vice chancellor to represent the State System Veterans Advisory Network (VAN) at this informal meeting.
