Tony Palamone, SBDC DirectorTony Palamone, IUP’s Small Business Development Center director, traveled to San Diego in February to present at the Small Business Institute 2017 annual conference. As part of the conference, organizers conducted a national competition on Best Practices in Student Engagement at SBDCs. Palamone gave a presentation on the Agency at IUP, a program run in the IUP Eberly College of Business and Information Technology’s Small Business Development Center.

The Agency at IUP, started by Richard Hoover, a consultant at the SBDC, provides a rich blend of experience, engagement, and education for students. Palamone’s presentation, titled “Prometheus Unbound: Reigniting the Spirit of Student Engagement,” took third place at the competition.

The Agency at IUP, Leaders' Meeting February 2017The Agency at IUP, which has been evolving over the last few years, provides students with first-hand experience across a variety of technical and leadership skills while providing businesses with marketing and other deliverables and collaterals. The Agency at IUP is a student-led organization designed to fit into a niche in the market, as many small businesses cannot or do not hire an advertising agency to put on a marketing campaign, develop graphics, a web page, a video, or even establish a social media presence. To date, the students have not charged for their services, but the long-term vision is to generate some revenue to support the student efforts.

The popularity and relevance of the program is attested to by the fact that, every semester, approximately 20 to 30 students volunteer for 10 or more hours a week to produce work for businesses. Agency participants consistently say the program differentiates them in job interviews, as they are able to speak about their experience in dealing with real-world projects.

The Agency at IUP is on Facebook and Twitter.
