Krys Kaniasty is a member of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, led by Professor Ben-Ezra (Ariel University, Israel), that has been investigating prejudice toward persons with tic disorders, especially sufferers of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome. This collaboration recently culminated in a paper titled “Revising stigma: Exposure to Tourette in an ordinary setting increases stigmatization” published in Psychiatry Research.

Exposure to a media clip of a person presenting tics in a common setting subsequently elicited stigmatizing attributions toward the GTS patient in the vignette. It is recommended that clinicians, teachers, parents, and policy makers attempt to create a greater sense of public empathy for people with GTS and influence the media to become reticent in portraying their symptomatology as an entertainment factor.
