On March 1, 2017, Erick Lauber (Journalism and Public Relations) presented the results of his research on the media’s portrayal of the drug problem to the Drug-Free Communities Coalition, sponsored by the Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission.

Nearly 40 people were in attendance and his remarks followed a question and answer session with Rep. Dave Reed (R-Indiana). Lauber conducted a content-analysis of the most recent 100 Indiana Gazette articles covering the substance abuse issue with students Shelly Maras and Kirsten Schlorff. He compared these results to similar national analyses and showed “holes” in the stories the community is learning about the drug epidemic. He then demonstrated two new “stories” about drug addiction and made recommendations on how to address the public about the substance abuse problem.

Lauber’s talk was titled “What Are They Telling Us and What Are We Telling Them.” Lauber has been asked to repeat his talk for a similar substance abuse prevention/recovery group in Blairsville, Pennsylvania.
