Biology professor Tom Simmons gave a presentation on “Ticks: Management and Personal Protection” for a sustainable landcare accreditation training offered by the Phipps Conservancy and Botanical Gardens on February 20, 2017.
This interactive presentation focused on the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne diseases in the United States, especially the blacklegged tick and Lyme disease in western Pennsylvania. The presentation covered the biology of the blacklegged tick and applied this knowledge to
creating and managing landscapes, as well as using personal protective measures to reduce Lyme disease risk for landscapers and their clients. Recent results from blacklegged tick and Lyme disease pathogen research conducted by Simmons and his students in the Disease and
Vector Ecology Laboratory in the Department of Biology were also shared with the participants.
