“Unfortunate Events” on Wednesday, February 22

English students will host a showing of the 2004 film A Series of Unfortunate Events in HSS B10 on Wednesday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m.

After the three young Baudelaire siblings are left orphaned by a fire in their mansion, they are carted off to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). Unfortunately, Olaf is a cruel, scheming man only after the inheritance that the eldest Baudelaire, Violet (Emily Browning), is set to receive. The children escape and find shelter with their quirky Uncle Monty (Billy Connolly) and, subsequently, their phobic Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep), but Olaf is never far behind.

The theme for this semester’s film series is gender identities. So, instructors with courses on that theme and students with that academic focus are especially encouraged to come share these movies and discussions. But, anyone is welcome, and Jim Carrey and fantasy fans should be especially interested.

As always, attendance vouchers will be available. We’ll also announce info for the Film Club’s first movie trip and t-shirt design contest.
