On January 26, 2017, IUP hosted a training program provided
by Pepper Hamilton LLP related to Title IX Adjudication.
The program was attended by more than 130 higher education
colleagues from across the state, including,
Bloomsburg, California, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville,
Slippery Rock, West Chester, Carnegie Mellon, Robert Morris, and Pennsylvania State
System of Higher Education, as well as 52 members of the IUP community.
The trainers, Leslie Gomez and Gina Smith,
partners at Pepper Hamilton LLP, are nationally known and advise colleges and
universities on federal, state, and local regulations, including Title IX; the
Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013; changes in the laws; and
investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct, including sexual violence.

and Smith provided an intense, six-hour training which focused on best
practices for hearing members; trauma-informed questioning; due process; and
the intersections of Title IX, the Clery Act, and the Campus SaVE Act.
addition to the presentation, attendees had opportunities for open question and
answer sessions, including identifying a positive occurrence from their own campus
related to Title IX.
“Most of the responses that were shared indicated
that there is a lot of really great work happening on these campuses,” Valerie Mercado, IUP’s Title IX coordinator, said. “It also indicated that
there is a positive outlook on how we are handling these issues, and that
campuses are approaching solutions as a team. Today was a great day for learning
and working together on how to move forward and navigate these complicated and
