The Akropolis Reed Quintet, an innovative ensemble with acclaimed precision, will perform in Indiana as part of the Lively Arts’
Ovations! series. The quintet will present their program on November 9, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall on the second floor of Sutton Hall on the IUP campus.
Formed in 2009, the Akropolis consists of Tim Gocklin, oboe; Kari Dion, clarinet; Matt Landry, saxophone; Ryan Reynolds, bassoon; and Andrew Koeppe, bass clarinet, all of whom are founding members. Their ensemble chemistry is infectious, with one reviewer stating, “The group, who played from memory,
elevated precision to passion with their brilliantly tight performance.”
The Akropolis performs an innovative repertoire of classical music spanning four centuries up through modern-day masterpieces. For this program, they will perform music by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764) and George Gershwin (1898–1937) to more contemporary composers such
as Marc Mellits and David Biedenbender.
Akropolis is deeply invested in establishing the reed quintet as a cornerstone chamber music ensemble and has created the first consortium of 15 reed ensembles from three continents. Their dynamic concerts have raised them to critical acclaim and have allowed them to commission more
than 25 works to date.
Furthering the construction of a new paradigm in chamber music, they are committed to reaching out and fortifying the next generation of musicians. While in town, they will also present a question and answer session in IUP’s Stapleton Library on at noon on November 9, to which the public is invited
free of charge. They will also offer a workshop for area high school and university music students.
Tickets for Thursday evening concert are available either online, or the Lively Arts’
online ticket site. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at 724-357-1313. Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance.
Tickets are priced at $22 for regular admission, $18 for seniors and groups, and $12 for students and children.
