The Litton QuartetAs part of its Sound Choices series, the IUP Department of Music will present the Litton Quartet in a fall concert on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. The program will start at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall.

The program will include works by Franz Josef Haydn, George Gershwin, and Litton first violinist Stanley Chepaitis.

Haydn’s two quartets of Opus 77 are the composer’s last and perhaps greatest efforts in the form that he had perfected over a career spanning five decades. The first of the two is a work on the verge of 19th-century romanticism containing some of the composer’s most adventurous and forward looking music.

The haunting “Lullaby for String Quartet” by America’s beloved George Gershwin is an early work that has become a perennial favorite on string quartet programs.

Violinist Stanley Chepaitis’ original work “Dances in Time” is an essay on the connection between string music of all genres and the dance. It combines dance traditions of American roots music with native American, African, and South American styles.

Other members of the Litton include Swana Chepaits, violin; Raul Fauré, viola; and Linda Jennings, cello.
