College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and IUP’s Chapter of Sigma Xi invite you to this semester’s first presentation of the Science Inspires series.
Professor Ken Coles from the Geoscience Department will begin this semester’s Science Inspires Series with a presentation titled “Seeing Red: Mapping Mars to Understand its History.”
The talk is scheduled for September 15, 2016, at 4:30 p.m. in Johnson Hall, Room 247.
The Atlas of Mars (co-authored by Coles with K. L. Tanaka and P. R. Christensen) is the first atlas to present geography, geology, and physical and chemical interactions of the surface with the atmosphere and interior of the red planet.
The primary audience for the Atlas is non-specialist readers. In this talk, Coles will examine how this project came about and illuminate current research in planetary science and future ideas for robotic spacecraft. Coles will present a host of questions and mysteries about Mars, as revealed in a sampling of
data and images.
