The School of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Hawkins as director of the Applied Research Lab (ARL). His appointment provides an important first step towards expanding ARL services to meet the needs of faculty, students, and external clients.

Hawkins, a former ARL graduate lab assistant, has provided research design and statistical analysis consulting services to the IUP community for the past several years. His prior experiences include teaching undergraduate research methods, constructing and delivering research and data analysis workshops, designing and administering online surveys (including the IUP Middle States master survey), analyzing quantitative and qualitative data using various software packages, and publishing peer-reviewed research.

His current research focuses on drug market interventions, offender re-entry, fugitive apprehension programs, and the application of stochastic modeling to legal decision-making. He received his Master of Arts in Criminology from IUP in 2010 and is currently a criminology doctoral candidate with an anticipated August 2017 graduation.

As the ARL embarks on an expansion of its services, Hawkins brings the requisite skills to provide steadiness and innovation aimed to meet the needs of researchers.

The Applied Research Lab is located in 123 Stright Hall. Consultations and assistance will be provided by appointment only until September 1 (drop-in hours and locations will be announced after this date). To set up an appointment, please e-mail or, or call 724-357-4530.
