English Professor Michael T. Williamson presented a paper, “Take a Book of Records and Record: Ethnography, Commemoration and Imagined Surveillance in the Eastern European Space Between,” at the 18th Annual Conference on The Space Between, Literature and Culture, 1914-1945. The conference was dedicated to the study of surveillance.

Williamson's paper considered the strange kinds of literary history produced by minority ethnic groups in the Soviet Union during the period between 1925 and 1948. In the paper, Williamson pointed out how the combination of resistance to and complicity with Soviet modes of surveillance created new forms of literary consciousness.
