WalkWorks is a nationally funded program. The purpose
of the program is to increase opportunities for physical activity through a
network of fun, fact-filled, and community-based walking routes led by group leaders. The group leaders will be students from the Exercise
Science program within the IUP Kinesiology, Health, and Sports Science
In 2015, Indiana County was selected to participate in the WalkWorks
program. The program is a collaboration
between the Indiana County Office of Planning and Development, the Pennsylvania
Department of Health, and the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of
Public Health to increase opportunities for physical activity across Indiana
County. Through this grant-funded program, planners work with local
communities to identify community-based walking routes and form sustainable
walking groups that will enhance and expand active transportation, with the
ultimate goal of improving the health of county residents.
We would like to invite IUP students, employees, and faculty to our
Kick-off Event on Wednesday, June 29, at 6:00 p.m. at IRMC Park.
Individuals can come and learn more about the
program and meet a few of the group leaders. We will also be walking a two-mile course, and individuals can join us or simply enjoy the festivities. The walking group will meet each Wednesday at
6:00 p.m. to walk the designated course together. Group leaders will provide motivation and information on other healthy
options and opportunities for the group.
