Beatrice Fennimore, Professional Studies in Education, wrote an essay titled “Say That the River Turns: Social Justice Intentions in Progressive Public School Classrooms” in the Occasional Paper Series (OPS #35) of Bank Street College of Education, titled “Progressive Practices in Public Schools.”
Progressivism has historically challenged standardized approaches to public education and encouraged ethical child-sensitive approaches that foster democratic understandings in children. For progressive teachers, relationships in the classroom community are always an important part of the daily learning experiences.
In her essay, Fennimore explores the promise of applied ethics and commitment to social justice in real classroom settings. She applies theory to practice, providing examples of the ways in which progressive teachers can respond in positive ways to situations which might otherwise invite the rejection of children or a deficit-based approach to children and families.
