Cohen, Steinway Artist, to Perform in Gorell

Arnaldo Cohen As a finale to the 2015–16 Ovations! series, the Lively Arts welcomes Arnaldo Cohen as part of the Ovations! series. The Steinway Artist will perform on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall.

Brazilian-born Cohen was raised in Rio de Janeiro, displaying his musical potential at the age of five when he began playing the violin and piano. Cohen continued his musical interest and graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with a degree in piano and violin.

The virtuoso pursued a career a a professional violinist in the Rio de Janeiro Opera House Orchestra. Meanwhile, he continued studying piano under the direction of Jacques Klein. After Cohen won the 1972 Busoni International Piano Competition, he moved his primary interests to the piano.

He soon moved to London and began building an extensive repertoire of about 50 concerti. Cohen has performed with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, I’orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome. He has been compared to many of the great pianists such as Richter, Horowitz, Arrau, Argerich, Serkin, Gieseking, Lupu, and Kissin.

For his Indiana recital, he will perform a Chaconne in D Minor by Bach, Brahms’ Variations and Fugues on a theme by Handel, and the Four Scherzi by Chopin. He will also present a special class for high school and IUP music students.

As an all-Steinway school, Cohen’s appearance at IUP is one of several Steinway Artists who have performed on campus. This highly competitive and prestigious roster of pianists from all genres has included such greats as Cole Porter, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Arthur Rubinstein, Billy Joel, and Diane Krall, among hundreds of others.

Tickets for this event are available now online or the Lively Arts’ online ticketing site. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at (724) 357-1313. Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $22 for regular admission, $18 for seniors and groups, and $12 for all students and children.

The Ovations! series is funded, in part, by donations through the Premiere Club, business sponsorships, grants, and the IUP Student Cooperative Association. The Lively Arts, a program of the College of Fine Arts, presents nearly 200 performances, programs, and exhibits annually.
