Since the founding of
the University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania 40 years ago,
landscapes have always been included in the scope of its permanent collection. A
wide variety of these works are now on display at the Artists Hand Gallery in
downtown Indiana. The exhibit opened April 6, 2016, and will be on display
through May 2. Admission is free.
Landscapes currently
held in the collection depict familiar scenes to residents of western
Pennsylvania such as coal tipples, winter scenes, and woodland views. The works
also provide a window to the world beyond with views of Venice, the beaches of
Florida, and even sights from around the world.
Featured artists include
former IUP faculty members Alma Munson Gasslander, James Innes, Orval Kipp, and Ralph
Reynolds in addition to Woodstock Artists Association members Carolyn
Haeberlin, Rosella Hartman, Jane Jones, Norma Morgan, and Sally Orsini.
On display are also the
works of WPA artists Henry Gasser, Edith L. Rudd, and E. Vismara, among many
others.
The Artists
Hand Gallery, located at 732 Philadelphia Street in downtown Indiana, is open Monday
through Thursday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.; Fridays 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.; and Saturdays
9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays.
