The 10th annual Get Down at the Brown
fundraiser regaled scores of IUPatty’s revelers who paid $5 to hear three bands
rock the house and to boost two scholarship funds for Journalism and Public Relations Department majors at
Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The scholarship funds, managed by the IUP chapter of the
Society of Professional Journalists, were established by SPJ past presidents. The
March 18 edition of the annual bash raised $335.
Featured performers at the 2016 journo-palooza included Grist for the Mill
and student groups the White Crayons (featuring IUP SPJ Vice President Ethan
Brogan on electric guitar), and Black Ridge, a group that included IUP music majors,
which returned for a second year. SPJ President Kandace Mecham, aka Kandace, the
Electric Hula-Hooper, also returned.
Brogan said he was pleased.
“I think it was a good opportunity to
raise money for SPJ scholarships and to exhibit local music,” he said.
Proceeds from the event will benefit two scholarship programs administered
by the student-journalists organization—the Bill Harder Fund (established in
2007) and the Jake Williams Fund (established in 2014).
