2016 Dean's Merit Scholarship Awardees, Grateful FacesThe students pictured here are just six of the 99 students who received a Dean’s Merit Scholarship award this year. When I interviewed each of these students about scholarship support, a common thread emerged.

In addition to expressing their gratitude, all talked about the feeling of community they have within their respective departments and among their peers—that it feels as though they have a second family here. It was a wonderful thing to hear, and it made me feel very proud. My colleagues—all faculty and staff members—truly care about what we do.

Scholarship support motivates our students to excel, and it enables them to immerse themselves fully in the student experience. This year’s recipients used the funds to defray post-graduation debt; to purchase textbooks, coursework material, or research supplies; and to fund travel both regionally and abroad.

Graduating seniors in the Class of 2015 joined faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends to provide support to one of the six Dean’s Merit Scholarship funds last year. In fact, the support increased so much that deans were able to award 20 more scholarships. The Class of 2016 has also elected to pay it forward by supporting these same funds this year.
