The Lively Arts at IUP will present the Tony-Award® winning musical, Ragtime, as part of its
Ovations! series. This All-American hit will be presented Thursday, November 19, 2015, in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life as America was moving into the 20th century. Set in New York City, the musical intertwines the stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a young Harlem musician as
they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.
Ragtime premiered in Toronto in 1996 before moving to a year-long run in Los Angeles. On Broadway, where it played for two years, it was nominated for 13 Tony® Awards and won for Best Featured Actress, Best Original Score, Best Book, and Best Orchestrations. It also
received 13 Drama Desk nominations, winning for Outstanding Musical, Book, Music, Lyrics, and Orchestrations. It had a brief revival on Broadway in 2009, which earned it six Tony Award nominations and seven Drama Desk nominations.
This compelling story is set to theater’s richest and most glorious winning score by Pittsburgh native Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge and produced by the team that most recently produced The
Addams Family, Spamalot, Rock of Ages, and The Color Purple, Ragtime promises to be an unforgettable performance.
