Jonathan Warnock, faculty member in the Department of Geoscience, recently returned from gathering with scientists from around the globe who participated in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 347: Baltic Sea Paleoenvironments. The group met in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss their initial findings and plan out future research collaborations.

Expedition 347 took sediment cores from across the Baltic Sea in order to study its climate history, the impact of humans on the Baltic from medieval times up to the modern, and to learn about the microbial community living in deep sea sediments. Warnock and geoscience students will spend several years examining samples collected from these sediment cores with a goal that these findings can be used to better predict how future climate change may impact regional weather and water resources.
