Biology students Tashi Bharathan, Austin Edwards, William Gerardi, Rebecca Kruise, Sara McBride, and Victoria Stone presented the workshop “Safely Exploring the Woods in the Age of Ticks and Lyme disease” at the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival on September 12, 2015.

This community service experience provided the IUP students with the opportunity to educate the public about Lyme disease risk. At the workshop, information was shared about the abundance of blacklegged ticks and how the incidence of Lyme disease is dramatically increasing in Western Pennsylvania. The IUP students also explained why this is happening, how Lyme disease is spread, where it is found, and how it is prevented, diagnosed, and treated.

The students are working with Biology Professor Tom Simmons in his Disease and Vector Ecology Laboratory at IUP.
